Episode Transcription

Hi, this is your podcast host, Susan Burns. I'm also a lawyer in the cannabis industry and nothing delights me more than showcasing bodacious women in cannabis. Today we are talking with not one, but two bodacious women in cannabis, Janina Kaminsky and Melanie Simons, co-founders of Love You 3. And they have some amazing products that you're going to want to check out for sure. So welcome to both of you, Janina and Melanie.

Melanie, LYT:

Thank you.

Yanina Kaminski:

Thank you for having us, Susan.

Susan Burns:

So tell us about Love U 3. I'd like to know what inspired the name and tell everybody what the products are that you sell, the great products that you sell.

Melanie, LYT:

You bet. So Love You 3 Self Care is a cannabis brand. And we like to say we are not just a series of hemp-based products, but we are also a community of like-minded consumers. Our main products are what we call Lux gummies. They are Lux because they are not just your everyday edible, but they have ingredients that also support health, wellness, And most of them also support beauty. Happy to talk through that a little bit as well. But the way Love You Three came to be is Yanina and I, two best friends, found ourselves secretly consuming edibles that we found any number of ways, but none of which were very comfortable or transparent in our opinions. And so we saw that between the two of us and probably many other women in our community, there was a need for clean, transparent, and straightforward ways to consume cannabis. And so we set out to create our own. I'll also share the name Love You Three is very near and dear to our hearts. Yanina and I both had babies at the same time in 2016. And so we lived through pregnancy together and raising newborns and then infants and then toddlers and now six-year-olds, which is wild to say, it feels like yesterday. And during that time, our labor of love, truly in every sense of the word, became our brand. So love was built in. But love you three is really a term of endearment. It's how we tell each other, I love you and I love you more. It's our response. So Susan, somebody might say to you, I love you and your general response might be love you too. And for us, the reply to that is love you three. It's

Susan Burns:

Oh,

Melanie, LYT:

just

Susan Burns:

I get it.

Melanie, LYT:

a thing that goes on between

Susan Burns:

Lover.

Melanie, LYT:

us and especially with our little ones. And now we're bringing the love to the broader world and our community in particular.

Susan Burns:

So your love you to is T.W.O. I get it.

Melanie, LYT:

You got it.

Susan Burns:

Very clever. I love it. So I would like to hear more about and I'm sure our listeners do would like to hear more about that. What you're talking about, the ingredients in your products and why it supports health and wellness and beauty. So can you talk to us about

Yanina Kaminski:

Absolutely.

Susan Burns:

that a little bit?

Yanina Kaminski:

We created our products with beauty in mind, with those types of ingredients like hyaluronic acid, collagen, and also all of our products are vegan because we want to be inclusive for everybody to be able to try these products. Happy Hour, one of our products, our product line, we call them... Well, I'll just say she has not only collagen, but she also has vitamin D. So that was our first product that Melanie and I developed and we added vitamin D at the time because it was at the height of COVID. So we felt that was important. So each of our products, we really think about the wellness aspect as we created it. So for instance, Beauty Sleep, one of our fan favorites. has CBD, CBN, hyaluronic acid, and it has collagen. And that's very important to us because it's like a one-stop shop as a woman to be able to not only take something that's gonna help you kind of quiet your mind and peacefully get ready for bed, but it also gives wonderful attributes to your hair, your nails, your skin. So each of our products are designed with beauty, luxury, and overall happiness.

Susan Burns:

Very nice. And what is in happy hour? You said two of the ingredients,

Yanina Kaminski:

Absolutely. So for with.

Susan Burns:

but is it delta 8, delta 9? Is it hemp derived?

Yanina Kaminski:

Excellent question. In happy hour, we have CBD, CBG, we have vitamin

Susan Burns:

one of my

Yanina Kaminski:

D,

Susan Burns:

favorites.

Yanina Kaminski:

and we also have, the flavor is extremely important and close to our hearts as well because it's the apple cider vinegar along with a splash of strawberry because Melanie and I are big advocates of gut health. So that's what helped drive us to that type of flavoring. and it has Delta-8, which is the cousin of Delta-9. And so it's more of a euphoric lift. And with the other cannabinoids, it mellows out that effect even more. So it's a lovely edible to consume throughout the day, date night, girls night, cooking. It's a great, great product. And Susan, I think you tried it.

Susan Burns:

did try it and I can support that statement. Are those statements? Yes,

Yanina Kaminski:

Wonderful.

Susan Burns:

it's a wonderful product. And is it hemp derived?

Yanina Kaminski:

Yes.

Melanie, LYT:

It is.

Susan Burns:

It is hemp derived. So it's fed on a federal level it's legal it just depends on what each state has for if it's regulated or not in each state.

Melanie, LYT:

That's

Yanina Kaminski:

That's

Melanie, LYT:

exactly

Yanina Kaminski:

correct.

Susan Burns:

That's

Melanie, LYT:

right.

Susan Burns:

all.

Melanie, LYT:

And that was really deliberate, Susan. We wanted to, we're based in the DC metro area and there is not a legal recreational marijuana availability, at least not at the time that we were creating Love You Three. And still today it's very gray area, if you will.

Susan Burns:

Mm-hmm.

Melanie, LYT:

And so it was really important to us to know exactly where our products were created, not just where they were blended and produced. But also we wanted to be able to touch and feel the plants that our products were created from. And that's why we partnered with an organization and a company that's based here in this area, the Shenandoah Valley. They grow the hemp here, which is lovely for us. They do it in a sustainable way that creates environmental benefits rather than detracting from the environment. And that's the entire reason that Delta 8 is our core. THC product throughout our products because it is the way that we are able to know exactly where everything was grown, how it was produced and actually touch, smell, even pick some of the plants ourselves.

Susan Burns:

Nice. Well, that has to be an enjoyable experience.

Melanie, LYT:

all the way around,

Yanina Kaminski:

Very

Melanie, LYT:

absolutely.

Yanina Kaminski:

much so.

Susan Burns:

I love that. I love the smell of it, that earthy. It's just such a nice smell.

Yanina Kaminski:

It

Melanie, LYT:

It

Yanina Kaminski:

absolutely

Melanie, LYT:

sure is.

Yanina Kaminski:

is. And just to highlight one thing there, Susan, we purposefully left Delta 8 out of beauty sleep, because there are some folks who do not partake in Delta 8 or Delta 9. And so for us as women, we know that sleep is one of the most important things. And we really focus on our community. And we wanted every single woman to be able to accept that relaxation and ability to get herself into a wonderful place just to fall asleep. Because we all know, our brains are constantly moving and it's nice to be able to wind down.

Susan Burns:

Yes, agreed. Yeah, and if I had gotten Delta 8 before bed, I'd be sitting up.

Yanina Kaminski:

Yeah.

Susan Burns:

So I appreciate that. And I also tried Beauty Sleep. And I like that product as well.

Yanina Kaminski:

Wonderful.

Susan Burns:

Very nice.

Melanie, LYT:

Thank you.

Susan Burns:

And how about, so then you pick the plants that the Delta-8 is extracted from and where do they do the extraction? What's the process for that?

Melanie, LYT:

So it is a very complex process,

Susan Burns:

Mm-hmm.

Melanie, LYT:

and there is a lot of chemistry and science involved, but it all takes place in the location where our hemp is both grown and produced, which is again in the Shenandoah Valley. We partner with a company called Pure Shenandoah. It's a... a local business to the Virginia area, and it's also a family-owned business, which is really wonderful to support. I can't tell you that I'm a chemist or that we could describe to you the molecular transition from hemp to CBD to Delta-8, but suffice to say they have an extremely, they have an extremely complex and sophisticated laboratory. that we have the opportunity to tour and visit very frequently at our wish and whim. And it is very cool to see, to see something that is grown in the ground and transitioned into a physical product that's almost like a goo or a jelly, and then have that transitioned into our gummies, our final product, is really satisfying, quite frankly.

Susan Burns:

I imagine it is. And you don't do the actual manufacturing into the gummies yourself. You have somebody else do that.

Melanie, LYT:

It all gets

Susan Burns:

OK.

Melanie, LYT:

done with our grower, Pure Shenandoah. They bring

Susan Burns:

Oh, they

Melanie, LYT:

it

Susan Burns:

do

Melanie, LYT:

from,

Susan Burns:

the whole thing.

Melanie, LYT:

absolutely, they take it all

Susan Burns:

Wow.

Melanie, LYT:

the way from the seed that goes in the ground all the way to the product that is produced. So we're really proud to have a single source for all of our products.

Susan Burns:

Awesome.

Yanina Kaminski:

And to piggyback off of that, Susan, we also are lucky that our manufacturer can track seed to sale. They have that technology. So that's another layer for us that gives us comfort as we bring our product to life amongst our community.

Susan Burns:

That's an excellent feature. We need more of that, I think, in my opinion,

Yanina Kaminski:

Yes.

Susan Burns:

in the industry to be able to track. So when did you start the company? I know you were talking about it as your children were born and through that whole process. But when did you actually launch?

Yanina Kaminski:

So we launched in February 14th of 2020.

Melanie, LYT:

2021.

Yanina Kaminski:

2021, thank you, Melanie. I always think it's been longer, but yes, we've been working on this product for many years. And the Genesis has started in our kitchen, we cooked it, we received such fanfare, went to a lab, formulated them, found our manufacturer. So yes, it's been since February 14th, 2021.

Susan Burns:

And how do you did in so I'm gathering that your market is women. Your target market is women.

Melanie, LYT:

Yes, primarily women, especially women who are frankly relatively new to cannabis, who want a way to consume that is both discrete but also helps them to feel their best. Our packaging is different than any product packaging in the industry. We specifically use packaging that is, first of all, aesthetically beautiful, that would fit right in next to your most gorgeous products on your counter.

Susan Burns:

It is.

Melanie, LYT:

Thank you.

Susan Burns:

It is.

Melanie, LYT:

We also use packaging that is sustainable and fully recyclable. So that is a new development in recent months for Love U3. And we finally use packaging that's ultra clear with a QR code that takes you to our website to learn more about the exact measurements of every ingredient in our product. So it was really important to us to appeal to women just like us, but also again, to make it accessible, comfortable, convenient. We sell primarily and almost exclusively, not exclusively, but almost exclusively online to all states that allow Delta 8 and in fact, to all 50 states for our non THC product BeautySleep.

Susan Burns:

Great. I love that you have the whole picture in mind.

Melanie, LYT:

Absolutely.

Yanina Kaminski:

Thank you.

Susan Burns:

That's great. And so since you've been working on this and developing and growing into your company, I've got a couple of growing your company and launching it. I've got a couple of questions about that. One is, how do you market yourself to distinguish yourself from now we have a proliferation of gummy companies? And you have a. fairly unique approach, I would say. And how do you market that in a way that differentiates you? Let's people know.

Melanie, LYT:

Well, to avoid giving away all of our secrets, we'll start with just kind of outlining our sort of three-pronged approach to bringing our products to our community. The first is use of social media. We know that social media allows any company like Love U3 to get right into the hands and hearts of a very specific group of people in a specific community. So we do quite a bit of social media marketing, influencer marketing, and we really lean heavily into the communities that look a lot like us. Now, we're not exclusively women-centric and we're not exclusively centric around any particular age group, but we have found a lot of connection through social media to women who are mothers, women who are working, women who are working mothers. And then that kind of expands from there. The second prong in our marketing is going directly to businesses that also target our same communities. So these are very high-end salons, spas, hotels for turndown service, for example. And so we have found our way into the locations that our community is already spending their time, but in the most lux luxurious way. And then the third is through communications like this, really finding ourselves in conversation with women like yourself and making sure that our grassroots efforts are enhanced with really high quality conversations with. trustworthy sources like you, Susan.

Susan Burns:

Thank you. And do you have a phrase or something that you, a byline or tagline that you've coined that kind of hits on who you are?

Melanie, LYT:

Yeah, I mean, it's something that we find ourselves using in some of our marketing, you know, collateral. We like to say that Love U3 allows you to elevate your everyday. So because we have different products that span all different lifestyle needs, we really think of these products as something you could build into your daily routine. We both use Love U3 products every single day for various benefits and feelings, but elevating your everyday is sort of this double entendre play on words that elevate to be high through the use of our products, but also to elevate, to luxuriate in the outcomes, especially the beauty outcomes that our products provide.

Susan Burns:

Nice, very nice.

Melanie, LYT:

Thank you.

Yanina Kaminski:

I wanted to say... And I wanted to, again, speak about something that Melanie raised, which I think is very important. As per what you stated, Susan, that if you were to take a gummy that had the Delta-8 in it, you wouldn't be able to sleep. However, some folks are able to take a happy hour and find themselves also winding down and being able to use that to go to sleep. other folks can take beauty sleep during the day and find that it gives them that great just like mellowing of anxiety if you will and just like being able to proceed in their day. So we do not inform with our products except from beauty sleep because beauty sleep is really positioned for a beautiful night's sleep. But we love individuals to be able to incorporate our products how it best suits them in their day-to-day life.

Susan Burns:

Well said, yes. Every system is unique, and every endocannabinoid system in every body reacts to products differently.

Yanina Kaminski:

Absolutely.

Susan Burns:

And that's an important point that people should always keep in mind when they're trying something new to the industry,

Yanina Kaminski:

Absolutely.

Susan Burns:

I think. Yeah, very good point. So how about some obstacles or hurdles or challenges that you've overcome? It's hard to start a business. You know, it has challenges. I mean, it just takes a lot of work. I can tell you're both very passionate about it, and you love what you're doing, which is the biggest thing. And I think that helps you get through those points. But talk to us about some of those, or one key challenge, or something.

Melanie, LYT:

It's hard to pick just one, Susan, but let's give it a go. First of all, you're exactly right. Starting and running a business is not easy. It's especially not easy during a global pandemic, which is when we launched. And it's also not easy in such a challenging industry where regulations are continuously and constantly changing and where you really don't know what you'll be legally allowed to do day by day. So I'll leave the legal and regulatory aspect as kind of a point too, but I'll start by sharing that back when we were first kind of creating this brand and this product, which as Yenina said, we launched in February of 21, but we had been working on creating and bringing a product to market for... almost a year prior to that. And in that year, we really had to first of all, learn our stuff. I mean, we were in chemistry labs testing different ingredients, different cannabinoids, different products, different molds for our gummies to actually shape them. We did so much and Yanina should earn all the credit for really hunkering down and trying many different recipes in. her home, in her kitchen. I mean, we spent hours

Yanina Kaminski:

It was

Melanie, LYT:

cooking

Yanina Kaminski:

a group

Melanie, LYT:

and

Yanina Kaminski:

effort.

Melanie, LYT:

distilling

Susan Burns:

Atta

Melanie, LYT:

and

Susan Burns:

girl!

Melanie, LYT:

testing. And it was an absolute blast, but it was a challenge. I say that because it all kind of culminated in the creation of a product that we needed a producer to mass create for us. We couldn't possibly do this in our home kitchens at the scale that we wanted to get to. One of the biggest challenges we faced is we initially partnered with a producer who was more or less known in the cannabis industry at the time and contracted with them to create our product. And we learned, unfortunately, that this particular organization was just not above board, not willing to work with us to the specifications that we needed to ensure that we were providing clarity and transparency to our consumers. Because that was such a critical and crucial aspect of our business and what we were bringing in our product, we ended up having to sever ties with them, which was not an easy task, especially with contracts in play, especially with significant amounts of investment in play. And so that was a huge challenge and, you know, lessons were learned, no doubt about it. you know, significant cost, but it also really allowed us to highlight our guiding light. Our North Star was to bring clean, transparent, and wonderfully delicious edibles to market for our consumer base and our community. And so it was really easy to make a difficult decision when we let that guide our future. And so you know, we could talk about it offline over a handful of gummies anytime you'd like and anytime any of

Susan Burns:

OK,

Melanie, LYT:

your listeners.

Susan Burns:

you can do a handful. I can

Yanina Kaminski:

hahahaha

Susan Burns:

do a handful.

Melanie, LYT:

Okay,

Susan Burns:

But

Melanie, LYT:

you take

Susan Burns:

OK,

Melanie, LYT:

one, we'll take five

Susan Burns:

I've

Melanie, LYT:

to get

Susan Burns:

got challenge

Melanie, LYT:

through that.

Susan Burns:

accepted.

Melanie, LYT:

But regardless, your listeners should know that it has been a labor of love, no doubt about it, and it has not been easy, but it has absolutely been a wonderful learning experience and not one we're willing to give up.

Susan Burns:

Good. And I'm so happy to hear you talk about the struggles with the contract and extricating yourself from that because it's so important. One of my clients said, you know, you're the first person to talk to us about having contracts. And we've been in the business for four years.

Melanie, LYT:

Mmm.

Susan Burns:

They're the first lawyer to talk to us about contracts, which I mean, I understand because I've been working with emerging businesses for most of my career. But. And so as it happens, you have a passion and you start doing things and then you don't think about that and, oh, this person who is Sally's sister has a company and they said that, you know, but there's so much more involved and good reasons to do a contract. But this isn't a podcast about legal issues. But I'm really glad you bring that up because it's very important for growing businesses to. to have all those things in place. And so also, there's another thing about business that I've noticed, and that is that just as there are challenges, there are hidden benefits and joys along the way that those moments where you think, oh my gosh, if I would have known this cool thing would happen, I would have started this business 20 years ago. It kind of reminds me of what grandparents say about they would have had their grandkids first. You know, like those things that you just don't expect that are so wonderful. How about a couple of those moments?

Yanina Kaminski:

I think for myself, it's, um, and for, for Melanie and I, as we journeyed on this road, indeed, like for grandparents, they'd want to see the grandchildren first, but truly having to raise the children is what brings that joy and that kind of ease, I think for that person to be able to let go of a lot of hardships that they might've carried on themselves, pressure with their own children and just. living in the joy and the moment of those of that next generation for them. So for my experience with Melanie, as we've grown our company, first and foremost is having my best friend by my side. As you know, I think we both serve as each other's right hands in areas that we need. And I also feel as though we've just begun. I mean, we really are. Proud, we're really passionate and we really want. to build this community of women and so that there's no stigma around taking an edible, that you can do that at your free will and have something that also looks absolutely beautiful on your nightstand as you do so.

Melanie, LYT:

I

Susan Burns:

Yes.

Melanie, LYT:

have to add to that, just to highlight Inina's comment, when you started to ask that question, Susan, what has been the highlight, what's been the best part, it's absolutely been our friendship just flourishing. And you always hear the old trope, don't mix friendship and business, or pleasure in business. And we've been maybe lucky, or maybe just strategic, or maybe. a combination of the two to have our friendship and our connection as friends flourished to an even deeper level because we brought this new being, this new product, this new brand and company into the world. And that is such a gift. I also think, you know, we could tell dozens of stories about the customers of ours and our community that has benefited from our products. One that comes to mind is a woman who, for a number of different reasons, political, religious, and just values-based reasons, would never, absolutely never allow herself to engage in any kind of cannabis consumption. But because her daughter encouraged her to try Love You 3, specifically Beauty Sweep, to handle some of the medical issues that she's been struggling with for decades. She has found relief, she has found good sleep, and she has found something that really gives her a better quality of life. And to hear those things directly from the consumer is just extraordinarily fulfilling for us. And it's also what makes overcoming some of the challenges that we inevitably face day to day, all that much more worth it.

Yanina Kaminski:

Absolutely.

Susan Burns:

Congratulations, yes, I can imagine. That would be very affirming.

Melanie, LYT:

Thank you.

Susan Burns:

So yeah, good for you. And I would say I have another business coming up if you could bottle the ability to work with your best friend and deepen the friendship instead of because the trope you mentioned I have seen time and time again. And I've always advised clients to make sure you're very clear on who's doing what. So do you have any? tips for going into business with a friend, a best friend or any friend.

Yanina Kaminski:

I think it's been, from our experience, it's been day by day. Starting a new business is hard on its own, but where

Susan Burns:

Yes, it is.

Yanina Kaminski:

it really is and to where one person can excel in one place and another person then will in another place. And I think for Melanie and I, there's never been like a real segregation of roles, if you will. It's been, we kind of have this flow. She flows, I flow. We know what we're doing. to date been working that way. And we read each other's cues. We know which way we're pivoting to without even really talking to one another at this point. So, and not that we don't talk, but if there's something quick that we have to answer on the fly or something comes up, we're able just to know, I really feel like I know what she would say. So I'm like, okay, we're going with this, boom. It's just really that. that's what's worked for us. So we're very blessed because at the end of the day, our sisterhood is more important than anything. So we're building, we're continuing to build that sisterhood, but we're also blessed to have our company.

Susan Burns:

That's so great.

Melanie, LYT:

I'm going to cry talking

Yanina Kaminski:

I

Melanie, LYT:

about

Yanina Kaminski:

know

Melanie, LYT:

this.

Yanina Kaminski:

I'm tearing

Melanie, LYT:

It's so

Yanina Kaminski:

up a

Melanie, LYT:

true.

Yanina Kaminski:

little.

Melanie, LYT:

I

Yanina Kaminski:

Hehehehe.

Melanie, LYT:

mean, again, we're really lucky. We're blessed. Yenina and I naturally are intuitive people, and so we really intuit each other's perspective and emotions, but I also think it's just we came at this from such a state of connection that it's just easy. I think we're just really lucky. I mean, I'm not one of these people, but you know the people out there who are in a marriage or an intimate relationship that just vibes. You just see it. They can finish each other's sentences, but they don't even have to say a word. We're lucky that we have that in our friendship. And you know, you could attribute it to, you know, the good workings of the universe or any number of other things, but we're just really fortunate and will never question it.

Susan Burns:

That's great. That's really great. And I can tell in talking with you that you have that connection and there's a synergy.

Melanie, LYT:

Absolutely.

Yanina Kaminski:

Thank you.

Susan Burns:

because until now I've been communicating primarily with Yamina. And to see you two together is great.

Yanina Kaminski:

Thank you.

Susan Burns:

So what makes each of you in your own right bodacious? I can tell what makes you and your company bodacious, but what about each of you in your own right? What's your unique bodaciousness?

Yanina Kaminski:

Well, I would say so for one for unique, but then one for just in general, our my bodacious is also our relationship because that's very important to me. And it's been just a beautiful journey with Melanie for myself. I think it's passion, it's dedication, and it's discipline. That's what makes me bodacious.

Melanie, LYT:

I would say

Susan Burns:

Thanks.

Melanie, LYT:

the same thing about you, Unina.

Yanina Kaminski:

Thank you.

Melanie, LYT:

You're welcome. What makes me bodacious? This is Melanie and I am bodacious because I am passionate. You never have to wonder how I'm feeling. It will come through in my face, in my words, and in my actions. I am very passionate in everything I do. I'm also authentic. I think those two go hand in hand. I believe in being authentic in all ways at all times. And finally, I'm brave. I'm willing to take risks if the hope and perceived outcome is worth it for more than just myself, if it is worth it for others as well. And so those are the three things I would say make me a bodacious woman.

Yanina Kaminski:

They absolutely do.

Susan Burns:

There you have it. Bodacious Woman times two, wrapped up in a beautiful company called...
